While reading about the life story of Frida Kahlo, Bernadette Peña’s granddaughter began to identify similarities between herself and the artist. She related to Frida’s eyebrows, her love for painting, and their shared experience living with a disability. Inspired by this moment, Peña dressed her granddaughter as Frida and watched her beamed with confidence.
After finding minimal representation of diverse voices in children’s literature, Peña founded Miella Media© and it’s media properties, Nuestra Gente: A Tribute to Hispanic Innovators and Dreamers™ and Brava: A Celebration of Women™. The collection highlights the global contributions and history of influencers and change makers, applying a multicultural and multigenerational approach to cultivating identity and cultural literacy through authentic narratives and programming. Dressed as iconic figures of yesterday and today, children portray the individuals whose stories shaped and influenced the history and culture of society, bridging generations of trailblazers to the leaders of tomorrow.
